(I have sometimes referred to Chibi as a reference implementation, but
only in the sense that it shows that R7RS-small *can* be implemented;
there is absolutely no requirement for any other implementation to be
bug-for-bug-compatible with it.)

Furthermore, the strict compatibility defined by a reference implementation that many expect of Python implementations has been part of the reason that there hasn't been a flowering of Python implementations.  Considering how simple the language is, one would expect many more.
