I'm sorry, maybe my tone was not appropriate in that comment.

Anyway, the rationale you presented makes sense, and as far as
I can see the problem would be solved with the uppercase solution
already mentioned (which would not make reading scheme confusing
for beginners and other students trying to use books written for
different versions of the standard).
