I'm completely in sympathy with this idea, but it violates the IEEE
standard, and as such would require an extraordinary justification.
Those who wish to avoid characters can currently easily do so using
the existing string functions, or in the case of the classification
predicates and char/integer converters by employing trivial wrappers.
