Put more simply, trying to use the result of `when' or `unless'
is meaningless.  Can you provide an example of using the
result that you wouldn't consider bad style?

I can't provide an example, but then again, I can't really definitively say that
there isn't one.  Fair enough, though I'm still leary of just forcing everything
to unspecified values here.
